Does hojicha contain stems?
Hojicha can be made out of leaves, stems, stalks, and twigs.
When hojicha is made exclusively from leaves, it has a deep smoky flavor and is less sweet. When hojicha is made exclusively from stems, stalks, and twigs it is mildly smoky and tastes sweeter (also known as roasted Kukicha).
In line with the philosophy of wholeness of Japanese Zen Buddhism, our hojicha is made from the whole tea plant without any waste. The sweetness of the stems combined with the smokiness of the leaves result in a well-rounded flavor that delights with each sip.
What is the shelf life of hojicha?
While hojicha can be safely consumed long after its best before date, it may start to lose its optimal taste within a month of opening the bag or container. Unopened, the flavor and nutritional components of hojicha remain stable for at least one year after it has been packaged.
Where is your hojicha from?
Our hojicha is packaged fresh from the tea fields of Kyoto, Japan. Originating from the prestigious Uji region, home of Japanese tea, our teas are categorized as Ujicha.
Is your hojicha single-origin?
Our hojicha is single-origin, and each tea is grown entirely on the same tea farm in the Kyoto prefecture, Japan.
How is hojicha pronounced?
Hojicha is pronounced with a long "O" and ends in "Cha" like in matcha. "Cha" means tea in Japanese and in a few other languages. Listen to this audio pronunciation of hojicha in both English and Japanese.
Is it hojicha or houjicha?
Hojicha is written ほうじ茶 in Japanese. While the literal translation for "う" is "U" in English, the combination of "ほ" and "う" is pronounced "Hō". The macron on the "ō" simply indicates a long vowel sound. Since most Japanese words lose the macron when they become naturalized in English, ほうじ茶 is more accurately spelled "hojicha" in English.
Does hojicha taste like green tea?
Unlike traditional Japanese green tea, hojicha leaves are roasted in high temperatures. The roasting process removes all bitterness from green tea.
Do I need to add sweetener to hojicha?
Hojicha is best enjoyed without adding any sweeteners. Let your cup of hojicha cool to best experience the tea's natural sweetness.
Why is my hojicha more smoky than sweet?
Hojicha tastes smokier when hot. Prepare your hojicha with 90°C water, and let the tea cool to experience its natural sweetness as the flavor deepens.
What’s the difference between Hojicha Dark Roast and Hojicha Gold Roast?
Hojicha Dark Roast and Hojicha Gold Roast are harvested in different months. Hojicha Dark Roast is harvested in June during the bancha harvest, resulting in its rich and smoky flavor. Since Hojicha Gold Roast is harvested from sencha leaves in May, it has a satisfying umami flavor best enjoyed at a lower temperature. (Watch this video)
