Hojicha Milk

Transform any plain milk into rich and aromatic Hojicha Milk in seconds.

The most popular plant-based milk in Japan is soy milk, and in the average grocery store you'll find more than just one flavor. There are common flavors like chocolate milk and coffee milk, but also more obscure ones like milk flavored with kinako mochi or amazake. Currently there are over 60 varieties to choose from between the two most popular soy milk brands. One of the treasured options is of course the Hojicha Milk.

In this recipe, we show you how to satisfy your cravings for Hojicha Milk in just a few seconds. As an added bonus, when you make Hojicha Milk at home you can use soy milk or try any milk of your choice.

All you have to do to enjoy Hojicha Milk anytime is to prepare a batch of Hojicha Simple Syrup ahead of time. Hojicha Simple Syrup is made by dissolving sugar and Hojicha Powder in water, and then heating the mixture on a low heat to preserve the rich flavor of the roasted tea. One full batch of Hojicha Simple Syrup is enough to prepare about 4 litres (135 oz) of Hojicha Milk. Though you can easily cut down the recipe, or keep the Hojicha Simple Syrup for another recipe as it lasts for up to two weeks.

Once your Hojicha Simple Syrup has cooled down, simply add a splash of it to your desired milk, stir well, and your Hojicha Milk is ready.

Start with the recommended measurements below, and then adjust to your liking depending on the type and brand of milk you select. Try soy milk or oat milk for a creamy drink, or reach for almond milk to enhance the nuttiness of the roasted tea. Store your Hojicha Milk in the fridge, and enjoy within the suggested time frame on the milk’s packaging (typically 3-10 days once opened).
